Edinburg police officers are currently investigating a major crash on I-69 that left two dead on August 21st.
According to a news release, police were called to the 4000 block of south I-69C around 5:30 a.m. to investigate the incident. Officers arrived to find a gray Chrysler Crossfire rolled over in the northbound lanes and a female lying next to the vehicle. Officers also observed a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck with damage to its front end on the driver’s side, as well as a Peterbilt 18-wheeler with a car transport trailer stopped along the expressway, according to the release.
A female driver and a male passenger in the Crossfire were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, and they are awaiting notification of next of kin. According to police, the crash is still being investigated, and toxicology results are pending.
While we don’t have many details about the cause of this crash, it appears an 18-wheeler with a car transport trailer may have been involved. Any time a commercial vehicle is involved in a crash it can very easily cause serious injuries and even death due to the weight of the vehicle. It appears that the deceased driver and passenger are the only two other witnesses to this crash so a thorough investigation should include more than just testimony from the driver of the commercial vehicle. It is imperative to gather surrounding surveillance video, pictures of gouge marks on the pavement, measurements, and a laundry list of important evidence. When the cause of the crash is not determined quickly, families suffer because they are stuck until they have more details and the evidence available at the time of the crash may no longer be available by the time a third party is involved. Victims’ families may not have access to the financial resources necessary to pay medical expenses and make final arrangements. Although our legal system can not undo the event from happening, an independent investigation may be the only way the victim’s family can obtain justice for the loss of their loved ones. In this situation, the family may wish to take steps to involve a third party as soon as possible. More details will be provided as they become available.
