According to Texas DPS officials, on August 15th at approximately 1:15 p.m. a Honda and a Jeep collided head-on near the intersection of FM 174 and Brock Road in Clay County killing two people and injuring one.
The Texas Department of Public Sheriff, Jeff Lyde, identified the first victim as Kerry Hodges, 43. Mr. Hodges received fatal injuries in the collision. The second victim was his wife, Ashley Michele Altum, 36, of Henrietta who was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Worth with serious injuries. The other driver’s name has not been released yet.
Accidents happen for many reasons and are oftentimes, a result of distracted driving. Driver inattention can happen due to texting while driving, talking on a cell phone, flipping through radio stations, and even eating and drinking while driving. I heard of a recent accident where the driver was on Facebook updating their profile page. The driver didn’t take a curve properly and drove off the road into a ditch, killing the driver and injuring a passenger. There was another recent crash where a young woman was posting a live video and caused a crash injuring herself and killing her sister. These are senseless tragedies and I feel terrible hearing about the loss of lives and injuries. No communication is so important that it cannot wait until a driver can safely pull over. Crashes caused by distracted driving are usually obvious since there is a trail of data confirming it. Drivers willing to risk the lives of others to use their electronics and the internet while driving should be held accountable.
